Creating Guiding Principles for Your Team

Every business needs to create guiding principles for their team to live by. You create these principles with your team, even if it is just one other person, or you will create them yourself and share them with each new team prospect.

To create these principles, you have to look at what is important to the business (which I hope you expressed in the planning phase of your business—if not, see me!). What is the thing that’s going to wake you up every morning, and what behaviors will you honor with your clients, whether you feel like it or not? What’s the thing that’s going to have you be in possibility versus be in identity?

Watch this quick video below to understand the importance of creating Guiding Principles for yourself and your team.

As mentioned in the video, these are the guiding principles of Motivating the Masses, Inc.:

  1. Leaders serving leaders, inspiring success while achieving results
  2. World-class service with a servant heart
  3. Value: In every conversation, in every interaction
  4. Balance with playfulness & creativity
  5. Team work honoring the dignity of the human spirit
  6. Students of the world, through transformation and self-growth

This is juicy, right? Because it is hard to be a regular person when you state principles like “I ignite the dignity of the human spirit with aliveness and genius,” isn’t it? You want to stand taller when you boldly assert these statements.

Remember to post your guiding principles in your office, in the break room, in the conference room, and the lobby of your business. Each department or division can have their statements posted that will light them up. If it is just you working in a home office, post your guiding principles on your wall. If you are a solopreneur who works in shared executive space, frame it and put it on your desk.

The intention is to have these inspiring messages in front of you each day as you set out to create magic in your business. Setting the tone for how you serve your clients during your productive and prosperous day will lead you to greater success. When your team acknowledges and adopts these principles, they elevate how they show up on the job. They also know that they will be held accountable to perform as the principles suggest.

When I created bold statements for my businesses, I wanted something that people could really sink their teeth into, but also made you go, “Oh, I have to be something different.” We wanted to create it from a place of possibilities. “Who am I going to be in the face of no agreement (when a customer’s complaining)?” Who am I going to be when I don’t want to serve them or when I don’t feel like it? How do you support that? Your guiding principles lead the way.

Post a comment below and tell me if you have guiding principles for your team. Are they exciting and inspiring? Do they make you want to really stand up? I hope so.
