How To Stay Coachable

How do you stay coachable? It’s probably one of the biggest challenges I have. I have to make sure that my ego doesn’t get in the way of what I’m trying to do.

But what does it really mean to be coachable?

It’s about how a person responds when giving feedback. This can be positive feedback or not-so-positive feedback. The ability to stay coachable will be a valuable tool in your personal development and your business development.

You also have to be willing to take action on that feedback. Research shows there is a direct correlation between competency and coachability.

The single most important thing you can do is ask for feedback. Find people in your community who you respect as well as colleagues and managers. Asking the opinions of people you respect is incredibly important.

Be humble and put your ego aside so that you can hear the suggestions and take action when needed. Create a lifelong habit of welcoming feedback. Research shows that the younger you are when you start this practice, the more coachable you will be inside of your career.

I like to also check in with my clients to make sure I am being an effective coach. I check in with my colleagues to ensure I’m being an effective leader.

Many of us entrepreneurs feel as though we are the lone rangers. That makes it harder to find people to give you feedback and evaluate your competencies.

I’ve coached a lot of clients that aren’t coachable. Keep in mind that looking at your competencies and your leadership demonstrations will give you far more effectiveness in your business.

It can be challenging to find the right coach and the right relationships. Choose someone you can’t manipulate and will call you on your stuff. Find someone who scares you a little bit because it means they’re up to a big game. You want someone who will be willing to call you out and hold you accountable to act on your greatness.

Here are a few questions for you to consider:

What do you need to stay coachable?

What areas do you need to be coached in?

I’d love to hear your answers because remember, you’re not in business BY yourself, you’re in business FOR yourself.
